The AISG Explorers Program

When we were younger, so many of the things we imagined for our future began with the same words: when I grow up.
When I grow up, I will travel. When I grow up, I will see the world. When I grow up, I will try new things, meet new people, and step into places I have only read about.

For many of us, those experiences felt far away, tied to adulthood, independence, and life after school. At the American International School of Guangzhou (AISG), students are learning that some of those moments do not have to wait.

Through the AISG Explorers Program, one of our Annual Fund's Signature Programs, students are given the opportunity to experience the world in ways that are immersive, thoughtful, and deeply connected to learning.

This year, students traveled to France and Denmark, where they explored culture, sustainability, creativity, history, and community through hands-on experiences designed to move learning beyond the classroom and into real life. These global travel experiences are part of how AISG helps students build the perspective, confidence, and curiosity they will carry with them beyond graduation.
But what makes these experiences so meaningful is not simply where students go. It is what happens while they are there.

During the Lunar New Year break, AISG students in Grades 9 to 12 traveled to France for a seven-day journey through Paris and Bordeaux. In Paris, they took part in a cultural immersion challenge in Montmartre and visited iconic landmarks including the Louvre, Notre-Dame, and the Eiffel Tower, building a deeper understanding of French history and culture.

In Bordeaux, the experience shifted toward sustainability, community engagement, and social impact. Students explored the city through a historical walking tour, visited Espace Darwin, a former military site reimagined as a centre for sustainable development, and took part in collaborative challenges and interviews focused on local social and environmental issues. They also joined a food distribution initiative supporting people in need and participated in a cooking workshop using seasonal, locally sourced ingredients, bringing ideas around responsible living and sustainability to life in a direct, practical way.

For AISG students in Grades 6 to 8, Spring Break brought a six-day experience in Copenhagen, Denmark, centred on sustainability, innovation, and creativity. Through a guided walking tour, students were introduced to Danish culture and the idea of hygge, the Danish word for a feeling of warmth, comfort, and contentment created through simple moments, meaningful connection, and a sense of being at ease., while visits to places like CopenHill showed how environmental thinking can be woven into the design of everyday life.

Across the week, students took part in activities that invited them to think differently about the world around them, from a seaside workshop on regenerative food systems to a sustainable fashion challenge using second-hand clothing, an embroidery workshop focused on upcycling, cycling through historic fortifications, and creating art from recycled plastic. They also explored how places like Tivoli Gardens balance entertainment, design, and sustainable practice.

Together, these moments offered students more than new experiences. They showed them how creativity and responsibility can exist side by side, and how ideas they encounter abroad can shape the choices they make in their own communities.
For some, going to France or Denmark may once have been something imagined for the future. Something attached to the words when I grow up. At AISG, students are discovering that some of life’s most meaningful opportunities can begin much earlier than that. They begin now.
Are you looking for a school where your child can explore the world before they leave school? AISG is the place for you.
