Learning on the Road: AISG China Trips
One of the most special parts of an international education in China is the opportunity to learn from the country itself. Experience China as a classroom.
At the American International School of Guangzhou (AISG), students engage in rigorous learning every day. But some of the most meaningful lessons happen when they step beyond the classroom: into new communities, across different landscapes, and into places where history, culture, challenge, and connection become something they can see, feel, and remember.
Through creative and differentiated learning experiences, such as China Trips, AISG gives students the opportunity to demonstrate their learning through the Approaches to Learning (ATLs) and embrace learning beyond the classroom, where they continue to develop self-management, social, thinking, and communication skills.
Across Grades 6 to 11, each China Trip, developed by our partners at The Hutong Education, is designed with a different developmental focus, giving students new opportunities to challenge themselves, strengthen relationships, and connect learning to the world around them.

Grade 6: Qingyuan - Building confidence through outdoor challenge and community connection
For Grade 6 students, the Qingyuan trip is an important step into independence and community building. Students explore a different side of Guangdong through cave exploration, rock climbing via ferrata, local tea culture, and the Peng Family Castle. The experience encourages students to collaborate, practise outdoor skills, take on new challenges, and reflect on the connection between personal growth and perseverance.

Grade 7: Yangshuo - Exploring global citizenship through landscape, culture, and service
In Yangshuo, Grade 7 students experience one of China’s most iconic natural landscapes while deepening their understanding of community and global citizenship. Through cycling, bamboo rafting, local cooking, karst climbing, and service learning in Xiatang Village, students engage with local communities and traditions, and physical challenges that help them better understand who they are, what they value, and how they can make a positive impact.

Grade 8: Henan - Discovering cultural heritage, discipline, and leadership
Grade 8 students travel to Henan, often called the “Cradle of Chinese Civilization” with over 3,000 years of recorded history, to explore Chinese cultural heritage through the Shaolin Temple, Longmen Grottoes, kung fu training, and a local kung fu school exchange. The trip invites students to consider how cultural heritage is preserved, what can be gained from intercultural exchange, and how discipline, communication, and teamwork can support leadership.

Grade 9: Beijing - Independence, collaboration, and cultural immersion
In Beijing, Grade 9 students experience China’s capital through history, language, teamwork, and leadership. From the Summer Palace and Temple of Heaven to the Great Wall and hutong-based challenges, students are encouraged to collaborate, make decisions, apply their Chinese language skills, and take greater responsibility within group settings. The experience brings history to life while supporting students as independent, communicative learners.

Grade 10: Sichuan - Developing empathy, conservation awareness, and personal growth
Grade 10 students travel to Sichuan, where conservation, community engagement, and personal growth shape the experience. Students explore Chengdu’s food culture, visit the Chengdu Panda Base, learn about the Dujiangyan Irrigation Project, and take part in Dialogue in the Dark, an experience designed to build empathy, communication, creativity, and understanding around inclusion and disability.

Grade 11: Xi’an - Connecting history, intercultural exchange, and reflection
For Grade 11 students, Xi’an offers a powerful opportunity to explore one of China’s most historically significant cities. As the starting point of the Silk Road and home of the Terracotta Warriors, Xi’an helps students examine Chinese history, intercultural exchange, and the movement of ideas, goods, food, and traditions across cultures. Through city wall cycling, Huimin Street, Terracotta Warrior activities, traditional cave dwellings, and culinary exploration, students reflect on how history continues to shape identity and connection today.
What connects each experience is reflection. Students are learning how to observe, ask questions, work with others, manage themselves, and make meaning from the world around them.
These are the moments that can change you. A student who tries something difficult. A group that works together through a challenge. A conversation with someone from a different community. A moment of reflection after seeing history up close.
This is the AISG Impact in action. This is Impact Beyond Graduation. Years later, our alumni still cherish these traditions, these experiences, and the cultural learning that came from exploring China, its history, its culture, and its people.
